The U.S. Surgeon General in a recent 2023 warning notes that isolation and loneliness are an “urgent public health concern.”
As human beings, it is clear that we are made for connection. We thrive in community and relationships. Unfortunately, there are many things that compel us to isolate ourselves from others, creating a sense that we can (and should) be able to handle life on our own.
But we're not meant to do it alone.
Recent surveys have found that approximately half of U.S. adults report experiencing loneliness, with some of the highest rates among young adults.
The reason the Surgeon General says that isolation and loneliness are such a concern is not just that they make us feel bad. The impact of loneliness and isolation on our bodies is comparable to that of smoking, diabetes, and obesity.
But, for many of us (about 20% of adults), we don't see "feeling lonely" as an issue.
The good news is, though, studies also show communities that are socially connected - friends and neighbors knowing each other, checking in on each other, and sharing experiences together - demonstrate very positive health outcomes: greater preparedness for and resilience during disaster situations, increased economic prosperity, and reduced rates of crime and violence.
Individually, social connection has a significant positive impact, as well. Social connection has been proven to reduce the risk of premature death and is a strong predictor of positive physical and mental health outcomes. It also plays a crucial role in stress reduction and health-related behaviors. Furthermore, the level of social connection an individual experiences can have a positive influence on their educational and economic achievements.
“To sink or swim” means to succeed or fail by your own efforts. All. On. Your. Own. It takes courage to reach out, connect with others, and progress through your challenges rather than fighting to avoid them.
But we know there is more to life than "sink" or "swim." If you’re tired of treading water, set an appointment with us. We will join you in your journey, meet you where you are, and provide you with the tools you need to find your way.
